What's the Matter With South Carolina?

Another day, another South Carolina Republican official doing something stupid--this time in a cemetery with an 18-year-old stripper, sex toys, and some Viagra. The official told the investigating police officer that the sex toys and the Viagra were things he always kept with him "just in case." He had a harder time explaining the stripper in the cemetery. North Carolinians like to say that their state is "a valley of humility between two peaks of conceit," but I'm starting to think it's pretty unfair to Virginia to lump it in with South Carolina that way.

"a valley of humility between two peaks of conceit" ?

Surely not during basketball season...

My recollection is that the "vale of humility between two mountains of conceit" description was originally applied to New Jersey during the 18th century. It might also apply to Raleigh during basketball season, but for the fact that Raleigh is well to the east of both Durham and Chapel Hill.

It's unfair to any state, or indeed to the nation as a whole, to be lumped in with South Carolina. It's a beautiful state, with many fine people, but culturally and politically it may be the least American place in America, a status that goes back 300-plus years to its unique colonial origins as effectively a colony of Bermuda and that has found expression in fits of actual disloyalty to the nation roughly every twenty years since the founding of the republic.

South Carolina is America's Quebec, except without the good jazz and with the inconvenience that the locals speak English, which makes it harder to ignore what South Carolinians are saying among themselves.

I am not sure what the stupid part is, the viagra? the cemetary, the toys? it sure as hell ain't the 18 year old stripper.

No charges were filed, he was on his lunchbreak, and there is no hard evidence of wrongdoing so why was he fired? Seems extreme to me. Rap his knuckles hard, sure but to deprive him of his livelihood on speculation is too much.

And like a 66 year old wanting to have sex with an 18 year old is confined to South Carolina. The only good thing I see is that he is old enough to retire and then he can get all the strippers he wants for as long as his viagra holds out. Yes, it is gross, but it is really not my business.

"Yes, it is gross, but it is really not my business."

Mebbe so, blackie, but you gotta admit it's fun to read about all the same.

We North Carolinians like to say that South Carolina was put on this Earth to make North Carolina look good.

And here was have more evidence it's true.
