ABC on Now Zad, a town in Helmand:
One area of town is so heavily mined, Marines refer to it as "no leg alley." Since 2005 several Marines have lost limbs there because of small bombs planted apparently not to kill, but to maim.
The principle tactic of Taliban forces in the area is to injure at least one Marine using an IED placed in a wall, doorway or path, and then to draw in more Marines who try to extricate the injured.
To the frustration of the Marines, it's a tactic that has some success. In October, one Marine was killed and eight others were injured after their MRAP hit an IED. After dismounting, they began taking small arms and indirect fire from insurgents.
All the casualties occurred after the Marines dismounted from the vehicle and encountered several secondary IEDs. What started as a routine engagement turned into a 10-hour firefight.

President Obama estimates it will cost 30 billion dollars to complete this surge. What would 30 billion dollars spent on security and intelligence here in the US get us? Is this really the most efficient way to prevent another terrorist attack?
Aren't the main sources of funding for these terrorists oil and drugs? So if we're really serious, why aren't working to make cars that run on anything besides oil, and legalizing drugs so we can reduce there value. If we did that the terrorists would simply run out of support.

Isn't it possible to get enough bomb sniffing dogs out there? The worst that can happen is the dog will get blown up. Anyone have any idea why this isn't a priority?
Acria, I agree with your second point completely, but not the first. 30 billion really won't get us much in the states and it would be useless if the Taliban regain control and cause Pakistan to fall. Nukes in the hands of these nutjobs and the 30 billion spent now in Afghanistan would be a hell of a bargain, unless you think a nuclear war between Pakistan and India is not our concern, because that will definitely happen.

Blackton, I'll admit I'm undecided about the overall wisdom of the surge. I'm just wondering what we do 3 years from now, when it's possible we have a very similar situation as now. Pakistan has never been a stable country, and neither has Afghanistan. I guess I'd be more confident if I thought we had a more comprehensive plan involving changing the entire mideast dynamic. Oil and drugs for a start.

Ditto blackton. The answer to the question posed by acria m's first paragraph is "more spending on bullshit entitlement/jobs programs that add nothing to our security".
Full agreement with both on the last paragraph.
