Today's Contest

When I clicked on Amazon this morning to find out about a book, I was informed that a book was about to appear that was tailor-made for my tastes: Going Rogue: An American Life by Sarah Palin. When I clicked on the button to “fix this recommendation,” I was informed that Amazon had recommended Palin’s book because I had once purchased Sanford Horwitt’s excellent biography of Saul Alinsky. OK, here is today’s contest: Sarah Palin is to Saul Alinsky as what or who is to what or who. You fill in the blanks. I spent ten minutes trying to do so, and gave up.

U2's early stuff is important and all, though I certainly hope people don't think "The Edge" is edgy at all when it comes to stage names. No one in the history of Rock n' Roll--and I mean no one--has ever had a moniker greater than "Handsome Dick Manitoba" of MC5.

These are pretty good. I was thinking along the lines:
As Britney Spears is to Billie Holiday
or for tennis players;
As Anna Kournikova is to Marina Navratilova
or in talk shows:
as Glenn Beck is to H.L. Mencken

. . . as Jeremiah Wright is to Barack Obama?

We've all got it wrong, assuming that the point is the degree to which Palin and Alinsky are opposites. But actually Palin is closer to a deranged but committed follower of Alinsky than she is to his opposite. So I submit:

... as Ayn Rand is to Josef Stalin.
... as Torquemada is to Jesus.
... as Jeff Koons is to Michelangelo.
... as John Hinckley Jr. is to Jodie Foster.

Ponce de Leon!

[waits]

No? Okay, how about:

McHale's Navy!

[waits]

Nope? Alright...this time I've got it:

Clams!

[waits]

Nothing? I'm...I'm really surprised. I mean, c'mon...I had you with 'Ponce de Leon', right? Too much, too soon? I shoulda eased into it, maybe led off with the 'Clams,' right?

[waits]

Wow, I...I don't know what to say...
