Irony, Thy Name Is Newt

Newt Gingrich, who in 2007 called bilingual education "the language of living in the ghetto" and in 1995 argued that bilingualism poses "long-term dangers to the fabric of our nation," has now launched a bilingual website, The Americano, to attract Hispanic voters to the GOP.

Here's betting he won't be penning any articles about Sonia Sotomayor's "racism" for the site.

I must protest.

Newt is not being ironic in the least here. It is clear that bilingualism used in an effort to teach Hispanics that bilingualism of the liberal kind is used to embrace those illegal aliens who speak only peon Spanish is not the same as those Hispanics who are fluent in both Spanish and Republicanese.

And Sotomayor was a racist because she unwisely spoke liberalese to the white folks at the 9/12 Project. In the tradition of George Will and Barck Obama though, I can see Newt inviting Sonia to dinner with less revanchist conservatives. I can't think of any off the top of my head but there must be some out there.
