The Case Against Sarah Palin

On the vice presidency:

"But as for that v.p. talk all the time, I'll tell you, I still can't answer that question until somebody answers for me what is it, exactly, that the v.p. does every day?"

--July 31, 2008, CNBC's "Kudlow & Company"

On Iraq:

"I've been so focused on state government, I haven't really focused much on the war in Iraq. I heard on the news about the new deployments, and while I support our president, Condoleezza Rice, and the administration, I want to know that we have an exit plan in place."

--March 21, 2007, Alaska Business Monthly

"Pray for our military men and women who are striving to do what is right. Also, for this country, that our leaders, our national leaders, are sending [American soldiers] out on a task that is from God. That's what we have to make sure that we're praying for, that there is a plan and that that plan is God's plan."

--June 8, 2008, Wasilla Assembly of God Church

On creationism:

"Growing up with being so privileged and blessed to be given a lot of information on, on both sides of the subject--creationism and evolution. It's been a healthy foundation for me. But don't be afraid of information and let kids debate both sides."

--October 25, 2006, gubernatorial debate

On global warming:

"A changing environment will affect Alaska more than any other state, because of our location. I'm not one, though, who would attribute it to being man-made."

--August 29, 2008, Newsmax

On energy:

"I think God's will has to be done in unifying people and companies to get that gas line built, so pray for that."

--June 8, 2008, Wasilla Assembly of God Church

On receiving $1.8 million in federal earmarks for the city of Wasilla:

"FYI This does not include our nearly one million Dollars from the Feds for our Airport Paving Project. We did well!!!"

--June 14, 1999, Wasilla City Council Informational Memorandum 99-62

On that "Bridge to Nowhere":

Question: "Would you continue state funding for the proposed Knik Arm and Gravina Island bridges?"

Palin: "Yes. I would like to see Alaska's infrastructure projects built sooner rather than later. The window is now--while our congressional delegation is in a strong position to assist."

--October 22, 2006, Anchorage Daily News

On library books she doesn't like:

"What would your response be if I asked you to remove some books from the collection?"

--October 1996 conversation with librarian Mary Ellen Emmons, Anchorage Daily News

On the secessionist Alaskan Independence Party:

"Your party plays an important role in our state's politics ... keep up the good work, and God bless you."

--2008* video address to Independence Party's convention

On Ivana Trump:

"We want to see Ivana because we are so desperate in Alaska for any semblance of glamour and culture."

--April 3, 1996, Anchorage Daily News

On running Wasilla:

"It's not rocket science. It's six million dollars and fifty-three employees. "

--October 1996, Mat-Su Valley Frontiersman

On being governor:

"I will unambiguously, steadfastly, and doggedly guard the interests of this great state, as a mother naturally guards her own. Like a Southeast Eagle and her eaglets, or, more appropriately here in the Carlson, like a Nanook defending her cub."

--December 4, 2006, inaugural address

On the prospect of becoming a candidate for vice president:

"It kind of cracks me up. It is so far out of the realm of possibility and reality."

--August 14, 2008, Financial Post

*In the magazine, the year of the address is listed as 2006. It is 2008.

The Case Against the TNR Editors

"Hey guys, let's post some quotes we found on Google and pretend to be journalists."

"Huh-huh. Yes. That would be cool."

September 2008

09/07/2008 - 12:06am EDT |

Those comments should prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that woman is incapable of being a heart beat away from the Presidency! My God, its real comforting to know McCain was so willing to put "Country First" and gamble with her selection. I guess he has nothing to worry about because if he drops dead it won't be his problem, it will the United States people who suffer from the lack of a capable President.

09/08/2008 - 3:05pm EDT |

The fear and hatred you people have for this woman TRULY DISGUSTS ME! I was going to sit this one out but now I'm not so sure - not because of McCain, Palin, Obama, Biden, et al. But hust to piss in the media's boot!

09/08/2008 - 5:55pm EDT |

About 82% of the comments attributed to Sarah are entirely reasonable, and represents a score miles and miles superior to anything ever writ by the snot-balls who contribute,if that's the right word,to your estimable publication. I wasn't going to vote but,lo,I shall now.

09/08/2008 - 11:56pm EDT |

No. What is truly disgusting is that a statesman like Sen. John McCain, with all of his experience and service to our country, would submit to such a cynical bid as to share a ticket with a woman who is so fundamentally flawed professionally.

Sarah Palin scores poorly on environmental concerns, religious tolerance, her state's highschool attendance rate and health services for lower income women. That Sen. McCain would know this and still share a ticket with her doubles the travesty.

09/09/2008 - 1:37am EDT |

Why does this woman scare you so much?

She is obviously very intelligent, a fast learner, and more than capable of taking care of herself and her family. And to be such a horrid governor that she has an %80 approval rating.

I guess she just doesn't fit your template.

If you spent half the time researching the CAC as you do dumping on this woman, you would know that Sarah Palin could not do half the damage to this country that "The Lightbringer" will do. And, if you had any sense of what America has always been about, you would be more frightened of O! than you are of Palin. Personally, I do not wish to live in a country known as "France West", and have my money that I work my butt off f ... view full comment

The tale is that Ms Palin is inexperience: after being in politic

for only such a short time and young to boot!

Seems:-

She was the captain of her basketball team.

She is the boss of her house.

She was the boss of her town.

She is the boss of her State.

All achieved in a short period of time!

She is unladylike, rough and tough and upset the Establishment:

and how dare she claimed to be a maverick and a stirrer!

In all his LONG years of experiences what is Obama boss of.

He never upset the Establishment hence can claim the title of “agent of change”.

Seems he is well qualified to be the President!

THE QUESTION IS: CAN YOU SEE SARAH PALIN AS THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES? NO WAY! NO HOW! How could you put our country in the risk of being governed by such an inexperienced woman like that?????

09/09/2008 - 12:10pm EDT |

Personally Im kinda of tired of feeble old people ru"i"nning the country..yeah, she's inexperinced..but maybe with out those years in office that usually beat political ideas and formats into ones head she might be the fresh breath that our government needs,,what we dont need is another political career perfecto with the right wife, the right car and the right words... and yess..shes has fire and spunk..does make her unlady like..I dont think so..that makes her American!!

09/09/2008 - 12:45pm EDT |

Does anyone notice that when the conservatives don't like what you write, they don't attack the argument or position (which is what happens in real debates), they attack the messenger? They don't address the veracity of the arguments against Palin, but they do erect distract, avoid, and dodge the issues while erecting straw men.

09/09/2008 - 12:52pm EDT |

I think it's plain to see what Sarah Palin has done for Alaska. What could she do for the USA? I think she will energize the country. We all should want a Government that's in check, a sound budget, and a sound economy.

We don't need a yes man in the White House, that's what Obama is. Look at his record in the 4 years in the Senate. What bills did he bring up to make any type of change for a better economy. All he did was vote along party lines, meaning a yes vote for all wasteful spending that came up for a vote. If He was for the change that He says he's for, his record in the last 4 years speaks for itself. He's just another tax and spend "liberal" who will tax us to death and and g ... view full comment

I am surprised to see that most of Sarah Palin's most ardent supporters are men, who I suspect would be the same ones that trashed Hillary Clinton during her campaign. How is Hillary not smart, quick and tough enough but somehow Sarah Palin is? How are smears and criticisms of Hillary legitimate, but questions about Palin's competence and experience are sexist? Your double standards are showing!

09/09/2008 - 4:05pm EDT |

On that "Bridge to Nowhere":
If she didn't veto the "Bridge to Nowhere", then where is that "Bridge to Nowhere"? I'm not much into conspiracy theories, but, is a "Bridge to Nowhere" any easier to hide than a "Bridge to Somewhere"?

09/09/2008 - 4:33pm EDT |

Is Republican Sen.Thad Cochran right when he says the thought of Mccain having his finger on the nuclear trigger scares him? If so having a person like Palin,
whose church supports theocracy and can't manage her household means little.

09/09/2008 - 9:08pm EDT |

Harpo:
Congress vetoed that bridge.

09/09/2008 - 9:29pm EDT |

I am a man and I don't support Sarah Palin. She's is in nowhere comparable to Hillary Clinton. Yes, incompetence and inexperience do count !!! Don't let other world leaders laugh at us for not seeing that!!!

09/10/2008 - 3:12am EDT |

"How is Hillary not smart, quick and tough enough?"

I have never said he wasn't all those things. My concern is that his ambitiousness - ("I will do anything to win") - has transformed quantity into quality, as someone once said, and exposes a certain psychic perturbation on his part that would have boded great ill for the Republic. And that's not even to mention that he resembles nothing so much as a political side dish composed equally of pus and snot.

09/10/2008 - 10:41am EDT |

She knows so little that the McCain campaign won't let her field questions. I don't need any further proof of her inadequacy. If I did, her delusions that all of her policies are god's will would suffice.

She read a script that someone else wrote at the RNC without screwing it up. Big deal. McCain's candidacy should be over for picking this uninformed, delusional nobody as his VP. Especially considering the enhanced probability that she could actually assume the Presidency.

09/10/2008 - 11:25am EDT |

This is your "case" against Sarah Palin? That she speaks unguardedly in friendly settings, that she uses colloquialisms instead of unctuous Wieseltierian prose, that she believes in a personal God instead of touting a muffled, arrogant agnosticism? Somehow you have failed to convince me.

09/11/2008 - 2:56am EDT |

The male Palin supporters I know just think she's hot and that's good enough for them.

09/11/2008 - 6:59am EDT |

Unguardedly? Hah! She speaks only guardedly, they're afraid to display how little about anything but parochial issues she really knows. But then again if you're doing "god's will", who really needs to know anything. We've endured one delusional, small mind in the Executive for 8 years, you'd think we'd have learned to reject any others.

09/11/2008 - 10:04am EDT |

This is the sort of "case" that sounds convinving to issues-oriented liberals, but isn't really that convincing to many others.

I recently got a taste of this when my wife, who is certainly no right-winger (and supported Obama in the primaries) told me she thinks Sarah Palin is "fabulous" and because of her plans to vote for the McCain ticket. I couldn't believe it. So I recited the bill of indictment against Palin, citing the creationism, the fundamentalism, the Jews for Jesus (we're Jewish) angle, the bald-faced lying, the hypocrisy. Last but hardly least, I emphasized that it isn't Sarah Palin who will be president. What about McCain?

She didn't want to hear any of it. As far as she ... view full comment

The Republicans bank on idiots voting against their self-interest and for stoopid reasons like "she's hot".

Her nomination and McCain's current campaign strategy of faux umbrage reeks of Turd-Blossom (Rove).

09/12/2008 - 8:25am EDT |

bpickar: Your story just adds proof to the axiom that you can't reason a person out of a position they didn't reason themselves into.

Maybe her threating a hot war with Russia that could kill millions will make people realize that this twit can't be a heartbeat away from Commander In Chief.

09/12/2008 - 8:28am EDT |

Last night Palin proved showed be even more than an ignorant, rightwing screwball, she's a dangerous, ignorant rightwing screwball. For 63 years avoidance of a hot war with Russia has been preeminate policy; to even mention it shows how dangerous it would be to have this twit a heartbeat away. Does she have any concept of how many millions could die in such a conflict? Over Georgia? Is Archduke Ferdinand spinning in his grave?

Nice that the twits at CNN in today's headlines don't even mention this aspect of her ignorance, but list as a headine that she thinks "sanctions may be needed". Wow, talk about putting lipstick on a pig!

09/12/2008 - 2:32pm EDT |

Hi Harpo,

I'd be happy to answer that -- Palin flip-flopped. She supported the "Bridge to Nowhere" before it was called that, before it became a political minefield. After she was advised to back off the bridge project, she then said that she was NOT in support of the bridge -- BUT she kept the federal money that had been earmarked for her state, anyway. So, no, there is not a "bridge" to hide, but the Repub party sure is back-pedaling to hide her previous intentions and actions. She, of course, has not addressed this directly, because she is not communicating with the "evil" press. This is only one example of how her record is being spun. I can't understand how people won't admit the c ... view full comment

Tom Shilz:

Palin scares me because her evident knowledge of world affairs would earn her a polite C- in a community college poli sci course. If you thought last night's performance demonstrated intelligence, I guess that only demonstrates how low GW Bush has lowered the bar. Her approval rating was 80% while she was hauling in tons of federal pork for her state (#1 per capita in the country). If you did the research you speak of, you would know that her popularity has dropped and she would be (and may still be) in some jeopardy in her own state on several scores at the moment--that is, had Mr. McCain not tabbed her to put a shine on his otherwise dull and moribund campaign and sent ... view full comment

Palin is a religious crank and knows nothing about foreign affairs. So what? Half the country thinks the world was created by God 6000 years ago. Others think wine can be turned into blood by someone mumbling over it. Palin may not know much about foreign affairs but she knows more than Harry Truman did.
Let get back to the real issue-McCain or Obama

09/12/2008 - 4:32pm EDT |

In the event of any kind of catastophe, whose finger on the nuclear button would you rather have: Palin or Biden?

09/12/2008 - 4:46pm EDT |

Why is it that so many clucking, hand-wringing Palin supporters feel compelled to chalk up every question concerning this woman's background, capacities, and attitudes to "fear and hatred," as though anything short of adoration is loathing?

09/12/2008 - 4:50pm EDT |

This piece does confirm one thing "beyond any doubt", as 1 commentator observed. However what that "one thing" in my view is the incredible elitism of TNR and many of its smug readership.

While I certainly don't agree with everything Sarah Palin says esp. her views on social issues such as creationism, guns, and abortion, many of her observations are refreshingly candid and sound like someone open to change, a position that the Obama campaign seems to feel they own (without much substance I might add).

So before TNR condemns everything the woman says as emaniting from some Alaskan looney tune about whom we can all get some good chuckles @ our next Upper West Side cocktail party, tak ... view full comment

My response: as much (or more) than I can see Obama as President!

09/12/2008 - 4:55pm EDT |

Well partly correct-- I was one of those actually supporting Hillary, simply because she was clearly the most qualified of all the candidates. And I agree that some of those who opposed and criticized her relentlessly (think Keith Obermann, Chris Matthews) reeked of sexism in so doing--shame on them.

I honestly don't think Palin is the intellectual equal of Hillary, but one must admit she brings some new energy and viewpoint to the campaign, and as a man with 2 daughters, it's refreshing to see at least 1 woman with a place on the Presidential ticket!

09/12/2008 - 4:58pm EDT |

Not only is Palin stupid and foolhardy, she seems to be prepared to mis-use her power in ruthless and mean-sprited ways (Troopergate).

God help us all if she becomes vp or president. I don't even live in the US and I'm scared. The Russians are already paranoid. The last thing we need is someone like her making it worse.

09/12/2008 - 5:00pm EDT |

Dear Republicans,
It is called fact finding. PS. To get the latest on John McCain's exaggerations, half-truths, lies and pants of fire lies, I suggest you go to factcheck.com.

Since telling, or endorsing, lies is not a problem for most Republicans, I am sure you will find that every proven lie on the part of your candidate will only make you believe in him that much more.

09/12/2008 - 5:23pm EDT |

Why doesn't TNR write a comparison between Palin and Teddy Roosevelt (i.e., fomer mayor, two years as a governor, likes to hunt, lots of kids, reputation as a reformer)?

09/12/2008 - 6:36pm EDT |

I can't imagine a CEO of a international corporation hiring Sarah Palin as Executive Vice President. Nor could I imagine "country first" McCain choosing her as his VP. As a wag said years ago when LBJ was president in imitating him, "I wouldn't lie to you, but I might kid you a little bit." Sadly, McCain isn't kidding.

09/12/2008 - 7:25pm EDT |

Sound Budget? SOUND BUDGET?! Are you kidding? She left her fair city in MOUNTAINS OF DEBT!
Har! Sound budget... what a maroon.

Bpickar - Palin scares this WW II combat vet and your description of your wife scares me even more. How would she would pick a brain surgeon: someone cute? easy to relate to? a good beer-drinking buddy? How has she manageed to function? What does she do with her degrees? Could she accept Palin as a colleague?

Please comment!

09/12/2008 - 9:26pm EDT |

I read these comments, and I found the large majority of them innocuous to inspiring, the latter especially each time she stressed the idea of doing our best to insure that our actions are in line with God's will. This collection is no case against ANYONE. If we were playing cards, I'd say that The Editors have one heck of a weak hand.

09/13/2008 - 3:07pm EDT |

Very thin gruel. Is this all you left wing Americans have got on Palin ? As a European conservative I believe character is the most important thing in a political leader. Palin has character and will grow to be a great President. Because of course she will be the Republican candidate next time.

09/13/2008 - 5:24pm EDT |

I'd rather have an ignorant President than one who is consistently wrong like Biden who in the last thirty years was only right when he regretted it afterwards. Experience, my foot!

09/14/2008 - 2:16am EDT |

Nice Tom - good use of a misleading statistic. Per capita distribution? Why not cite distribution per polar bear? It would make as much sense for analytical purposes. For the record, the Federal Budget for 2008 shows Alaska receiving $1.8B, or 0.5% for funding of ALL programs - 43rd on the list - below Washington D.C. and Puerto Rico. The top 3? California, New York and TEXAS. No one resents helping our neighbors recover from a natural disaster, but do you really think we can't find a couple of billion to cut from the nearly $27B that Texas is scheduled to receive in FY09?

09/14/2008 - 3:06am EDT |

Sarah Palin is a conservative Lawrence of Arabia who will attempt to reform Washington DC in a conservative Christian direction, starting with all the libraries in the United States, including the Library of Congress, to toss out all the books that don't conform to Christian morals. And that's just the beginning. There are lots of people who think this is a terrific idea, which is why those people are hoping that McCain and Palin win the election. And then Palin will become President of the United States shortly after that.

09/14/2008 - 7:23am EDT |

OMG! How can anyone take her seriously? Hasn't the last 8 years prove that it takes more than "He's a guy I could have a beer with and talk sports." to run the country.

As the very thin layers of Palin get peeled back we will see what a shallow, autocrat she is.

09/14/2008 - 11:20am EDT |

Congress withdrew the funding. Without it, they couldn't build the bridge.

09/14/2008 - 1:51pm EDT |

"Mike from Maryland" and a colleagues-- That is a really good reason, to make your voting decision "just to piss in the media's boot." Worthy of a five-year-old. The problem is, though, that when people tell you to grow up you retort that they're being snobs! So how does that help you become smarter? You are caught in an infinitely expanding loop of ignorance plus pride in being ignorant. Maybe you should stop while you are ahead.

09/14/2008 - 9:47pm EDT |

Can someone tell me what's supposed to be wrong with the quotation from her inaugural address? I don't get it.
